March 25, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University has hired J.C. Mellor as its new quarterbacks coach, head coach Steve Gilbert announced today. Mellor replaces Matt Elliott who was hired as a graduate assistant coach at Florida State.

Mellor comes to JU after serving as a graduate assistant coach last season at Central Michigan University, where he was responsible for opponent scouting and preparation. He also organized the offensive scout teams and worked with the inside linebackers. Mellor's camp experience at Central Michigan includes coaching the quarterbacks and secondary for grades 11-12, as well as coordinating the quarterback coaches for grades 7-10.

"J.C. is a bright, energetic and enthusiastic coach," says Gilbert, who led the Dolphins to their first winning season in 2001. "His innovative football mind, as well as his passion for teaching, will be an ideal fit for our young quarterbacks."

Mellor earned his B.A. in education from Michigan in 2001 after serving as an undergraduate assistant to the defensive staff during the 1998 season. He also worked as a recruiting assistant with TEAM BLUE during the 1997 season before moving over to Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Mich., where he served as the assistant varsity football coach working with the quarterbacks, and was the assistant offensive coordinator in 1999 and 2000. Mellor's 2000 team at Seaholm was a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division III finalist, while his quarterbacks threw for a school-record 1,768 yards and had a combined 22 rushing/passing touchdowns. Mellor also served as the Maples' assistant track and field coach from 1998-2001, where he helped coach five athletes to the MHSAA Division II State Finals in 2001.

The Dolphins, who captured the 2001 Southern Division Championship in their first year as a member of the Pioneer Football League, will complete their spring season with practices Monday-Thursday at the Ashley Sports Complex.
