Football's Kevin Womble Tabbed Preseason All-American
Aug. 29, 2002
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU offensive tackle Kevin Womble (Bonifay, Fla.) has been named to the Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette I-AA Mid-Major Preseason All-America First Team, which was released today. Womble, a key part of JU's record-breaking season in 2001 when the Dolphins rushed for a school-record 1,998 yards, was also chosen as a Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major Preseason All-American in July. Senior wide receiver Jon Turner (Melbourne, Fla.) and senior defensive back Linj Shell (Orlando, Fla.) were also chosen by Don Hansen's Football Gazette as All-America Second Team selections.
Womble helped pave the way for All-America running back Brent Alexander last season, who rushed for a school-record 1,089 yards and 12 touchdowns. JU finished the season ranked third in the Pioneer Football League and 43rd nationally in rushing with 181.6 yards per game. The 6-foot-2, 280-pound offensive lineman was also a First-Team All-PFL selection last season and was tabbed First-Team Academic All-PFL as a sophomore.
Turner earned First-Team All-PFL honors as a junior after posting a team-best (tie) 22 receptions for a team-high 531 yards, which ranked 10th in the PFL. He also grabbed a school-record five touchdown passes and had seven receptions for 30-or-more yards. Shell was one of the league's top defensive backs and kick returners a year ago. He was the only Dolphin to earn All-PFL honors as two positions. Shell had a team-high five interceptions, which ranked second in the PFL and 27th nationally and was also second on team with 10 pass breakups. As a kick returner, he ranked fourth in the league and 46th nationally with a 23.2 yard-per-return average.
The Dolphins are preparing for their season opener on Sept. 7 against Lenoir-Rhyne at 12:30 p.m. at D.B. Milne Field. JU returns eight starters on offense, while returning just three starters on the defensive side of the ball. Despite losing 25 seniors to graduation from a team that posted the program's first winning season (6-5), the Dolphins were picked to repeat as PFL South Division champions in a vote by league coaches. JU captured the 2001 PFL South Championship with a perfect 3-0 mark in league play in its first season in the league.
