Football's Mike Sturgill Earns Pioneer Football League Honors

Sept. 9, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU freshman quarterback Mike Sturgill (Vero Beach, Fla.) was named Pioneer Football League Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for his impressive debut in the Dolphins' 37-27 season-opening win on Saturday. Sturgill shares the honor with running back Dale Jennings from Butler, who rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs win on Saturday.

Sturgill completed 14-of-18 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns in his Dolphin debut to lead JU to a 37-27 upset of Lenoir-Rhyne, marking the second straight year the Dolphins have upset the Division II scholarship program. He had touchdown passes of 6, 17, 13 and 65 yards, while also running for 14 yards. Sturgill's performance was the top completion percentage in school history (78%) as he led the Dolphins to 390 yards of total offense, despite playing with a freshman center and only four starters back from last year.

Sturgill found senior wide receiver Jon Turner (Melbourne, Fla.) five times for 151 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown pass to clinch the game with 5:07 to play. Turner, who became the third Dolphin to eclipse 1,000 (1,135) career receiving yards, leads the nation in receiving yards per game, while Sturgill is atop Division I-AA in passing efficiency with a 257.6 rating. The young JU defense also shined against Lenoir-Rhyne by limiting the Bears to just 21 yards rushing on 24 carries, a new school record. JU ranks second in the nation in rush defense heading into its first Pioneer Football League South Division showdown at Davidson on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be the fifth meeting between JU and Davidson, marking the only team the Dolphins have played in each of their five seasons.
