Turnovers Costly In Dolphins' Loss To San Diego, 44-20

SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego Toreros played Jacksonville University in a inter-divisional PFL contest this evening and came away with a convincing 44-20 victory. With the win, USD evens their record at 2-2; the Jacksonville Dolphins lose their fourth straight and are 1-4. USD got 100+ rushing efforts from their senior running back duo of Kenneth Villalobos (17-for-123 yards, 2 TDs) and Phillip Thrash (14-for-114 yards, 1 TD) on their way to totaling 344 yards of offense against the Dolphins.

Junior kicker Adam Williams kicked a 20-yard field goal with 7:20 left in the 1st quarter for the game's first score. Villalobos closed out the 1st quarter scoring with a 13 yard run with 00:58 seconds left that put USD up 10-0. Williams converted his second FG from 42 yards early in the 2nd quarter to increase the Toreros lead to 13-0, but Jacksonville answered with a score two minutes later.

JU quarterback Mike Sturgill, who set a personal-record with 344 yards passing (28-for-48; 3 TDs), connected with WR Jon Turner for 43 yards at the 10:35 mark. San Diego responded immediately when QB Eric Rasmussen (8-for-19; 119 yards, 1 TD) hit WR Michael Gasperson for a 5-yard pass that culminated a 7-play, 82 yard drive. Torero RB Phillip Thrash increased USD's lead to 27-7 with 3:20 left in the half with a 5-yard run. Jacksonville found the endzone for the second time with 00:42 seconds left in the half when Sturgill connected again with Turner, this time from 13 yards as the halftime score stood at 27-13.

In the 3rd quarter, USD's Villalobos added his second rushing TD, this time from 12 yards; and backup QB Brian Kirkpatrick connected with WR Adam Hannula for a 61-yard touchdown reception. With the score 41-13 heading into the final quarter, Jacksonville's Sturgill connected on his third TD pass with 14:55 to go in the game when he hit Travis Lewis for a 15-yard TD. USD's Adam Williams, who finished 3-for-4 in field goals, made his final one at the 8:47 mark from 39 yards for the final 44-20 score.

Defensively USD was paced by LB Andy Guzenski (13 tackles) and CB Gavin Ng (8 tackles; 1 blocked kick). USD also picked off three Dolphin passes -- Bryan Newbrough (4 yard return), Tim Duerr (56 yard return) and Adam Combs (3 yard return).

For Jacksonville, Sturgill's favorite target was Turner, who also finished with a personal best 12 receptions for 196 yards and 2 scores. Travis Lewis (71 yards) and Julio Santiago (44 yards) both hauled in 5 passes. Chad Davis lead the ground attack with 38 yards on 10 carries.
