Shmunes and Williams Earn National Football Honors

Oct. 29, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU redshirt-freshman kicker Ross Shmunes (Jacksonville, Fla.) was named Division I-AA Mid-Major Special Teams Player of the Week and junior free safety Charlton Williams (Lynn Haven, Fla.) was named I-AA Mid-Major Defensive Player of the Week by Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette on Tuesday. Both players were also honored by the Pioneer Football League on Monday after helping JU erase a 14-point deficit and come from behind to beat Charleston Southern, 24-21, Saturday, marking the biggest comeback in JU history.

Shmunes accounted for a career-high 10 points, including three consecutive field goals, which helped JU narrow the 14-point deficit to 21-16 and set up the game-winning drive. Shmunes hit from 27, 32 and 26 yards out, the last of which came with 3:07 to play in the third quarter. For the season, the Raines High graduate is 7-for-7 on PAT's and 4-for-6 on field goal attempts.

Williams recorded seven tackles against the Buccaneers, while picking off a career-best two passes and breaking up three pass attempts as JU held CSU scoreless for the final 40:42. Both of Williams' interceptions came deep in JU territory and led to Dolphin field goals at the other end. The JU defense surrendered just 118 yards of total offense in the second half, including a mere two yards in the third quarter as the Dolphins overcame the early 21-7 deficit.

The win broke a five-game Dolphin slide and was the first for the non-scholarship program over a Division I-AA scholarship team. JU will play its third game in 12 days and its fourth-straight road game on Thursday as the Dolphins travel to Miami to take on Florida International in a special Halloween TV matchup on the Sunshine Network. Kickoff is set for 8:07 p.m.
