Dolphins Block Edward Waters Chances
Nov 9, 2002
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jacksonville University defensive back Jeremy Kearson returned two blocked punts for touchdowns Saturday, leading the Dolphins to a 44-31 win over Edward Waters College.
The Dolphins (3-6) blocked three punts in all - two by freshman Marshall Trace - and recovered a pair of fumbles from the NAIA Tigers (5-4). Kearson scored on a 5-yard return in the first quarter and added a 29-yard return in the third quarter on Trace's second block of the game.
Jacksonville led by just 24-19 at the end of three quarters, but broke loose with three touchdowns in the final 15 minutes. Tailback Chad Davis pushed across his second 3-yard scoring effort with 11:58 left in the fourth quarter to start the scoring spree.
The Dolphins then recovered an Edward Waters fumble on the kickoff and scored on the first play on a 14-yard pass from Mike Sturgill to Jon Turner. Turner had 7 catches for 70 yards, and needs just one more reception to tie the school career record of 114 held by Brett Palmi.
Edward Waters sophomore quarterback Dexter Davis threw for a career-high 415 passing yards on 21 of 33 pass attempts, including five touchdowns.
