Aug. 25, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University Dolphins will kickoff the 2004 season at Florida International on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast live on the Sunshine Network. The game, which is Sunshine's first broadcast of the season, will air to a statewide audience of more than 6.1 million homes. This will be the third consecutive season the Dolphins and Panthers have played on Sunshine, but the first meeting for the two programs to open the season. JU is entering its seventh season of intercollegiate football at the Division I-AA non-scholarship level, while FIU is in the transition phase of becoming a Division I-A program and currently offers 70 scholarships. A repeat broadcast of the game will air Sunday, Aug. 29 at 2:30 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 30 at noon. Miami Heat play-by-play announcer Eric Reid will call the action for Sunshine, while former Florida Gator Brady Ackerman provides color analysis and Dave Lamont will be the sideline reporter. The Sunshine Network has a statewide audience of more than 6.1 million homes and it will be the Dolphins' fourth televised football game since the program was started in 1998. "This is another outstanding opportunity to gain maximum exposure for our young program, not only throughout Florida, but all throughout the Southeast," said JU head coach Steve Gilbert, who has guided the Dolphin program since its inception. "With 12 schools now playing football in Florida, it's important for us to take advantage of any opportunities to expose Jacksonville University to the state of Florida and surrounding areas." Florida International will be the first of six scholarship opponents for the Dolphins this season. JU has won eight games against scholarship teams, including a 4-2 mark last season. FIU has defeated the Dolphins in the first two meetings between the two schools, including a 55-12 victory in 2003. Sunshine also begins its second season of TAILGATE SATURDAY hosted by in-studio Whit Watson and Brady Ackerman. Coverage kicks off Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. with COLLEGE KICKOFF, a live show previewing all of Florida's major football programs and providing game day insight and analysis. Fans can also recap all the day's action from around the state and ACC/SEC with TAILGATE SATURDAY FOOTBALL WRAP airing at 10 p.m., a none-hour live show breaking down all the day's key games. Available in more than 6.1 million homes statewide, Sunshine Network boasts one of the most impressive lineups of local and regional teams and events in the country. Sunshine currently has agreements with more than a dozen regional teams/properties including the NBA Orlando Magic, NBA Miami Heat and NHL Tampa Bay Lightning.
