Football preseason camp: Day 8B

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Nice, calm and cool conditions made for a pleasant atmosphere in the night practice of Day 8, but on the field, the offense and defense were getting after it. The session started with PAT/Field Goal before moving to position drills. The offensive and defensive line battled in one-on-one sessions while the receivers and defensive backs went through the air in the Red Zone. Next up, Team Blitz where the intensity turned up a little as the offense and defense challenged each other during the 10 minute session. The end of practice had punt block drills until Team Red Zone finished off the evening. Freshman running back Andrew Hepburn, who has sat out with a leg injury, led the break after practice. The squad will return to the field at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The following is some highlights from Day 8:

PAT/FG: Brett Buxbaum won honors this evening as he finished 2-fo-2 in PAT's and 2-for-2 from 30 yards. Donovan Curry was 0-for-2 on his two PAT attempts but nailed both of his attempts from 30- yards. Joseph Recktenwald and Chris Smith went 1- for-2 from PAT distance and each missed their only attempt from 30 yards.

Red Zone (7-on-7): 20-YARD LINE: FIRST ROUND: Junior quarterback Chris Horton went 2-for-4 with completions to junior receiver Michael Jenner and freshman receiver Cameron Abdullah. Horton was also picked off in the endzone by sophomore corner Robson Noel. SECOND ROUND: Junior quarterback Jason Hohensee went 3-for-3 with two completions to junior receiver Nate Conner and one to freshman receiver Sam Bell. The defense registered a coverage sack during the session. THIRD ROUND: Freshman quarterback Ken Latessa was 0-for-1 and the defense stuffed two run attempts. FOURTH ROUND: Horton was intercepted in the endzone by freshman corner Daryl Campbell. 10-YARD LINE: FIRST ROUND: Hohensee completed a pass to sophomore receiver Geavon Tribble. SECOND ROUND: Horton went 2-for-3 with a bullet pass to Conner for a touchdown and a completion to Jenner. THIRD ROUND: Hohensee was 1- for-3 with a completion to freshman running back Anthony Catalano. Sophomore strong safety David Onorato and junior corner Weidner Maxime each broke up a pass during the session. FOURTH ROUND: Latessa was 0-for-1.

Team Blitz (Offense vs. Defense): FIRST ROUND: Horton went 1-for-3 with a 15-yard screen to Jenner. The defense answered with a sack. SECOND ROUND: Freshman quarterback Chad Belcher went 1-for-3 with a touchdown pass to freshman receiver Ricky Cantartesi. Sophomore linebacker Brett Bonds registered a sack. THIRD ROUND: Hohensee went 2-for-3 with a touchdown pass to Jenner. Freshman linebacker Jeff Gissendaner broke up a pass at the line.

Team Red Zone: The defense allowed only one touchdown in five rounds, including two fumbles on the snap by the offense. ROUND ONE: Horton went 0-for-1 and the session ended with fumbled snap and a sack by senior nose guard Ryan Young. ROUND TWO: Freshman quarterback John Solak went 0-for-2 and the defense stuffed a run at the line. ROUND THREE: Sophomore running back Cecil Coltrane rushed for eight yards. Latessa went 1-for-2 with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jenner. ROUND FOUR: Freshman running back Ron Harris rushed for four yards. Solak went 0-for-1. ROUND FIVE: Horton ran for five yards. The session ended with a snap over the head of Horton.

The Dolphins will return to the practice field at 2:30 p.m.
