Football cancels second scrimmage due to lightning

Aug. 24, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville football team's attempt at a final scrimmage was cancelled on Thursday afternoon due to inclement weather and has been rescheduled for Friday at 6:45 a.m.

When the rains began to fall at 4 p.m., the players still continued to warm up but when the lightning struck soon after, the team headed for the locker room. After an hour wait, the coaching staff decided to cancel the scrimmage and reschedule for Friday morning.

"We tried to get it in today but Mother Nature had other ideas," said JU head coach Steve Gilbert. "We are going to get back out here early and start the scrimmage when the sun comes up. We have to cut it short due to kids having early class, but it's the only thing we can do."

The Dolphins have not had good luck with the weather when it comes to inter squad games. In the first scrimmage on Aug. 19, the contest was delayed for one hour due to lightning. Thus far in camp, the Dolphins have had no practices cancelled due to inclement weather.

JU Insider set to premiere - The JU Sports Network will still open its 2006 schedule on Thursday night, with the JU Insider. Fans are also encouraged to call in during the show to ask questions. The call in number for the show is (904) 298-1460.
