Bold City Bulletin, Jan. 9: Basketball Teams Rumble To Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- With 2018 now in full swing, the Jacksonville University men's and women's basketball teams began the new year on a high note, as JU posted a sweep of cross-town rival North Florida.

The Bottom Line

Before taking part in rivalry weekend, the men's squad ended non-conference action with a dominating victory over Trinity Baptist, Tuesday. The Dolphins eclipsed 100 points in a game for the second time this season, rolling to a 105-48 victory, their third-largest win margin in school history. All 12 active players on JU's roster put up points in the affair, which marked the return of junior Jace Hogan after four games, and senior Antwon Clayton for the first time this season. The team carried its success into Saturday night, as they traveled across town for the first installment of the River City Rumble. Trailing by eight with five minutes remaining and by as many as 12 in the game, the Dolphins used JD Notae's 20 second-half points to play catch-up. Following a game-tying three-pointer by the freshman with 1:58 remaining, JU would take the lead and never look back. Notae finished the 90-86 victory with 25 points overall, while fellow freshman Jalyn Hinton posted a career-high 22. The victory marked Head Coach Tony Jasick's first career win against the Ospreys, and snapped a nine game losing skid for the Dolphins against their River City rival.

The women's team began 2018 with a conference-opening win over the Ospreys, competing in the matinee of a Saturday doubleheader at UNF arena. After trailing 15-8 after a quarter of play, JU had little trouble with UNF for the remainder of the game, rolling to a 66-48 victory. Three players eclipsed double-digit scoring in the affair, with Kayla Gordon leading the pack with 16. The Dolphins have now won the last 10 contests against the Ospreys, including the last six by at least 10 points.

Quote of the Week

"I was going to jump off one foot because I didn't think he [UNF's J.T. Escobar] was going to jump, but I remember Coach Jasick always says to play off two feet, so I went up strong. I'm glad I did," JU MBB senior Antwon Clayton, following the team's win over North Florida Saturday evening.
