Ben Smith named A-Sun “Player of the Week”
Senior guard Ben Smith was named Atlantic Sun Conference “Player of the Week” after leading the Dolphins to the UCF Holiday Classic title with wins over Buffalo and UCF last week.

Including a controversial loss to Mercer on Saturday, Smith averaged 23.7 points, five assists, 3.3 rebounds, three steals while shooting 52.6 percent (20-38) from the floor, 47.6 percent from beyond the arc (10-21) and 80 percent (21-26) from the foul line in three games. For his efforts in the UCF Holiday Classic, Smith took home tournament MVP honors.

Against Buffalo, Smith ended a two-game losing streak for the Dolphins by tallying 23 points, three assists and two steals while connecting on 5-of-8 from beyond the arc en route to an 83-73 win in the first day of the event. Against host UCF, Smith completed the sweep for JU by registering 20 points and six assists in a 61-51 win the tournament finale.

Against Mercer, he led the squad with 28 points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds while hitting two free throws to put the Dolphins ahead in the contest before a controversial shot after the buzzer gave the Bears a 75-74 win.

During the week, Smith moved into ninth place on the program all-time scoring list, surpassing JU legend and former NBA star Dee Brown, while also making his way into second place on the program’s career assist list.
