JU welcomes back junior college Dolphins
Historic Swisher Gymnasium welcomed some familiar faces Saturday as JU welcomed back players from the Jacksonville Junior College era and the 1964-64 team for a reunion during Homecoming.

The department hosted more than 20 former players who played for the Dolphins during the 1950’s and 1960’s prior to the school becoming a four-year school. The group enjoyed breakfast, a highlight video of the men’s basketball program and took in practice for the 2010-11 squad.

Several member of the 1964-65 team returned to campus to celebrate the 45th anniversary of their trip to the NAIA National Tournament - JU's first postseason trip as a four-year institution. The Dolphins lost to the No. 1 seed in the first round of the tournament that season, who went on to win the national championship.

“This was a really special day to have so many people come back that laid the foundation for our program,” said Director of Athletics Alan Verlander. “We appreciate everyone who came and look forward to them returning for a game this season.”

At the end of the reunion, the former players’ legacy was cemented forever on the walls of Swisher as JU raised banners for the 1950, 1953, 1955 and 1956 National Junior College Athletic Association tournament appearances, as well as the 1965 team's trip to the NAIA National Tournament.
