JU opens home schedule on Tuesday against Savannah State
The JU men’s basketball team will open its 2010-11 home schedule on Tuesday night as they host Savannah State at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., with the game being broadcast on 1010XL as Barry Milligan and Artis Gilmore will call the action. Fans can also watch the contest live on ASun.TV.
Jacksonville (0-1) is looking to bounce back after a sluggish second half cost the Dolphins in their upset bid of Miami on Friday night.
“We let our offense dictate our defense in the second half,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We have to play defense at a high level on every possession. We didn’t do that on Friday.”
The Dolphins stormed out of the gates, building a 14-3 lead in the first three minutes of the contest. Jacksonville hit 15-of-30 in the first half, led by sophomore Glenn Powell’s 14 points.
The second half was a much different story. The Hurricanes hit almost 60 percent of their shots in the second half and used a 15-1 run late in the second half to pull away after JU had tied the game at 64.
There were plenty of bright spots in the loss that shows promise for the rest of the season.
Powell scored a career-high 18 points before fouling out in just 22 minutes of action. He was active around the basket and did a great job of finishing once the Dolphins got the ball inside.
Another stellar night came from junior Tevin Galvin. The Palm Coast, Fla. native scored a career-high 13 points, hitting four of JU’s eight 3-pointers in the contest.
One other highlight came from freshman Keith McDougald, who started in the first collegiate game of his career. He scored 11 points and hit three 3-pointers in the game while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
