JU starts two-game homestand on Thursday with USC Upstate
There’s no place like home – especially for the JU men’s basketball team this season.
The Dolphins (10-4, 4-1 A-Sun) look to stay hot at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Thursday when they host USC Upstate (2-13, 1-4 A-Sun) at 7 p.m.
Jacksonville owns a five-game winning streak at the Arena this year, with its closest game being a seven-point win over Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 30.
“We are looking forward to being back at home and playing in front of our fans,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “Our focus right now is to get better as a team each day.”
The Dolphins are coming off of a successful road trip in which they won two of three contests, with their defense carrying the load in wins over Lipscomb and Campbell.
JU held Lipscomb to just 56 points, the second-lowest offensive showing for the Bisons this season. Against Campbell, the Dolphins dominated the glass, holding a 36-25 edge in rebounding to take home a 67-65 win.
“Since our first practice, we’ve told our guys that no matter what is going on offensively, we can still play defense,” Warren said.
The offense has seen major contributions from sophomore guard Russell Powell, who is averaged 12.6 points per game over the last five, including a career-high and team-leading 16 points at Belmont.
What’s been critical to JU’s success has been the scoring balance. The Dolphins have just one player (Ayron Hardy – 12.1) averaging double figures in points and is just one of three teams in the country with a winning record that has not seen a player score 20 points or more in a game this season.
Thursday night’s broadcast will be on 1010XL, with Barry Milligan and Artis Gilmore calling the action starting at 6:45 p.m. with the Bono’s Barbecue Pregame Show.
