Dolphins look to rebound at Mercer on Thursday
The last time the JU men’s basketball team was on the floor at the University Center, they watched Mercer celebrating an upset in the semifinals of the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference tournament.

A year later, the Dolphins (11-5, 5-2 A-Sun) return to start a two-game road swing through the Peach state on Thursday as they face the Bears (5-13, 2-5 A-Sun) at 7 p.m.

Jacksonville is looking to bounce back after a 74-62 loss to ETSU in which the Dolphins fell behind early and never were able to recover.

“One of the things we stress is to play hard for 40 minutes,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We have to come out ready from the opening tip to play at a high level.”

Lighting up the scoreboard for JU in the loss was senior guard Travis Cohn.

The Decatur, Ala., native led the Dolphins with a career-high tying 18 points, connecting on a career-high tying four 3-pointers. The 4-for-7 performance behind the arc broke a 3-for-16 slump over the last eight games.

Cohn’s 18 point effort is also tied for the most points by a Dolphin this season, keeping JU as one of two teams in the country with a winning record that does not have a player that has scored 20 points in a game this season (Murray State is the other).

The downside of the loss to the ETSU was the Bucs’ shooting percentage.

ETSU hit 54.2 percent of its shots from the floor, the best percentage against JU this season and only the second team to shoot better than 50 percent in a game (Miami in the season opener). Topping it off, the Bucs hit eight 3-pointers in the game, the third straight game that JU has allowed at least seven 3-pointers.

Thursday’s game will be broadcast on 1010XL, with Barry Milligan calling the action starting at 6:45 p.m. with the Bono’s Barbecue Pregame Show.
