JU releases 2011-12 men’s basketball schedule
With two straight 20-win seasons in the books, the Jacksonville University men’s basketball team will face 10 teams that played in the postseason last year in releasing the 2011-12 schedule on Friday.
The Dolphins open their season on the road at Florida State on Nov. 11, the first of seven games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Other NCAA tourney teams on the schedule for JU are games at Florida (Nov. 25), at Marquette (Nov. 29), at Wofford (Dec. 18), at UAB (Dec. 22) as well as two games against defending Atlantic Sun Conference tournament champion Belmont.
“This year’s schedule is going to be difficult,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We play some extremely good teams in the non-conference portion to prepare our team for what will be a challenging race in the Atlantic Sun Conference.”
The Dolphins open their home schedule on Nov. 18 against Samford and will host Winthrop on Dec. 15, the only two home games in non-conference play. JU has six home-and-home series against mid-major opponents, with Wofford and Furman making visits to Jacksonville for the 2012-13 season.
JU’s A-Sun schedule begins on Dec. 3 against North Florida in a SunTrust River City Rumble matchup at the UNF Arena. Jacksonville returns to conference play on Jan. 2 as the Dolphins host Lipscomb followed by the first matchup with defending champion Belmont on Jan. 4.
Only one JU home game will be played away from downtown, with the Dolphins matchup against USC Upstate set to be in historic Swisher Gym on Jan. 16.
The upcoming season will be highlighted by Warren’s chase to become the school’s all-time leader wins. He enters the season tied for third on the all-time wins list with 92 victories at JU, equal to the mark set by the legendary Joe Williams. The record is 107 set by longtime coach Rollie Rourke.
Warren’s team returns five players who started last season, headlined by senior forwards Delwan Graham and Tevin Galvin. Sophomore Keith McDougald is the team’s top returning scorer after averaging 9.1 points per game as a freshman, earning A-Sun all-freshman team honors.
