Dolphins fall to North Florida, 80-58
Slow starts to the first and second half doomed the Jacksonville men’s basketball team as North Florida opened Atlantic Sun Conference play with an 80-58 win at UNF Arena.
UNF opened the game with the first five points and opened the second half on a 12-0 run, with Andy Diaz leading three Ospreys (5-4, 1-0 A-Sun) in double digits with a game-high 18 points.
The Ospreys hit 59.6 percent of their shots from the floor, including 8-of-13 from behind the arc. Charles McRoy was a key catalyst, hitting 3-of-4 from long range and scoring a career-high 15 points.
“Our defensive effort was not what we expect from Jacksonville basketball,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We didn’t do a good job of getting out on their shooters and you have to give them credit, they hit shots.”
Jacksonville (2-5, 0-1 A-Sun) dropped its third straight despite 16 points from Delwan Graham off the bench and a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds from Glenn Powell.
Sporting an eight-point halftime lead, UNF roared out of the locker room – scoring the first 12 points to take a 52-32 lead with 15:46 left in the game.
That hot start never cooled off as the Ospreys hit 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the floor in the second half, including 4-of-4 from 3-point land.
Jacksonville fell behind 5-0, but tied the game at nine on a layup by Powell with 14:52 left in the first half. UNF scored the next nine points and a Will Wilson layup ended the first half with the Ospreys scoring the last four points to take a 40-32 lead in at halftime.
Parker Smith added 11 points off the bench for UNF.
Keith McDougald had 15 points for JU, hitting 6-of-17 from the floor, while Russell Powell had 11 points, two assists and three steals.
The Dolphins are back in action again after finals when they travel to face Furman on Dec. 11. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
