Dolphins fall on the road to Stetson, 73-61
DeLAND, Fla. – After rallying to take the lead early in the second half, the Jacksonville men’s basketball team couldn’t hold on as Stetson rallied for a 73-61 win at the Edmunds Center on Saturday evening.
Adam Pegg led Stetson (6-8, 3-2 A-Sun) with 19 points and seven rebounds, one of four Hatters to finish in double figures scoring and helping them win for the second time in the last three games.
Jacksonville (2-13, 0-4 A-Sun) turned a seven-point halftime deficit into a small lead in the first nine minutes, but the Dolphins were unable to overcome the 16 turnovers that Stetson cashed into 25 points.
The Dolphins press was effective when they were able to get into it. JU forced 21 turnovers, but were only able to turn them into 21 points.
The turnovers overshadowed a big effort by Glenn Powell in the second half. The junior forward scored 13 of his team-high 15 in the second half, leading four Dolphins in double figures.
“Our press gave them problems, but we’ve got to finish when we get those opportunities,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We did a good job of looking for Glenn in the second half and feeding him the ball.”
Trailing 34-27 at the half, JU slowly clawed its way back into the game and used an 8-0 spurt to take a 44-43 lead thanks to six straight points by the post players – Powell and Shamille Jeffers.
Stetson quickly reclaimed the lead, 46-44, on a layup by Pegg with 12:05 left in the game. After a Tevin Galvin layup returned the deficit to two, Stetson jumped out to a 13-4 run, capping it with a Chris Perez layup with 5:19 left to take a 62-51 lead.
Jacksonville cut the deficit to nine with 3:10 left, but was unable to get any closer.
JU got 13 points and six assists from Russell Powell, with Keith McDougald adding 13 points. Tevin Galvin had 10 points and four steals.
Stetson closed the first half on a 10-4 spurt over the last four minutes to take a 34-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Stetson got 16 point from Chris Perez with Aaron Graham adding 14 and Joel Naburgs chipping in with 10.
The Dolphins wrap up their road sojourn on Monday when they travel to face Florida Gulf Coast. Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
