Colbert’s career night sparks JU rout of Stetson, 84-61
Lehmon Colbert scored 23 of his career-high 28 points in the first half to lead the JU men’s basketball team past Stetson at the Edmunds Center on Friday night, 84-61.

Colbert hit 9-of-12 from the floor, including all five 3-pointers and all five free throws, as his 28 points led four Dolphins in double figures. It was the fifth straight game he had scored in double figures and third 20-point scoring effort of his career.

The win was the seventh straight for JU (10-8, 8-1 A-Sun), the Dolphins longest winning streak since the 2000-01 season.

“We did a good job of executing on both ends early,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We got the ball up the floor quickly and attacked the basket. Our press was effective and we did a great job of converting on their turnovers.”

Colbert and Marcus Allen combined to score 34 of JU’s 48 points in the first half as the Dolphins took a 48-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The first half saw JU hit 18-of-30 from the floor (60 percent) and 5-of-8 from behind the arc (62.5 percent). The game was one of JU’s best shooting efforts on the season, hitting 30-of-54 (55.6 percent).

With a double-digit halftime lead, JU kept its foot on the accelerator in the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 27 and never letting the Hatters back in the game.

Allen finished with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Ben Smith had 13 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals, with Ayron Hardy pouring in 11 points with four assists and three steals.

Stetson(8-10, 5-5 A-Sun) got 22 points from Garfield Blair, the only Hatter in double figures.

The Dolphins return to the court on Sunday as they wrap up their road trip at Florida Gulf Coast. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
