Men's hoops set for critical two-game road trip
At the beginning of the season, the JU men’s basketball team set a goal to win the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title.
That championship is within the Dolphins grasp as they enter a crucial two-game road trip in Music City, starting with Lipscomb on Thursday night at 9:15 p.m. (EST).
JU (16-11, 14-4 A-Sun) has won two in a row and four of its last five to hold a one-game lead over Belmont with two games left in the regular season.
“We’re focused on the next team on the schedule right now,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We’ve worked very hard to get to this point and all you can ask for is to control your own destiny, which is what we have.”
The Bisons (14-13, 10-8 A-Sun) are the hottest team in the league, having won six in a row to surge into fifth place in the league standings.
Lipscomb also has a home court advantage, having won the last four meetings between the two teams on its home floor.
“Lipscomb is a good team that is playing at a high level,” Warren said. “They have a lot of people who can beat you in a lot of different ways, so we have to be prepared for a very hungry team on Thursday.”
The first meeting between the two teams was back on Dec. 6, with JU rolling to an 83-67 win. Four Dolphins scored in double figures as JU hit 51.6 percent of its shots from the floor, including 8-of-17 from behind the arc.
More importantly for JU, a win against the Bisons clinches at least a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference title – the first regular season league title in the history of the program and the first of any sort since 1986.
