JU falls to Lipscomb, 92-82
With a strong inside-outside attack, Lipscomb blew past JU on Thursday night at Allen Arena, 92-82.
The Bisons (15-13, 11-8 A-Sun) won their seventh straight by hitting nine 3-pointers, with Brian Wright hitting four. Adnan Hodzic led six Bisons in double figures with 22 points and four rebounds.
Lipscomb hit 60 percent of its shots from the floor, making 12-of-17 in the second half (70 percent) including all three 3-point attempts. For the game, the Bisons hit 9-of-14 from behind the arc.
The Dolphins (16-12, 14-5 A-Sun) got 19 points from Ben Smith, but now face Belmont on Saturday in a winner-take-all matchup for the Atlantic Sun Conference title and the No. 1 seed in next week’s tournament.
“Giving up 92 points is unacceptable,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “We gave them too many open looks tonight and you can’t do that against a team like this.”
Lipscomb used a great shooting night at the free throw line to further its advantage. The Bisons hit 29-of-36 from the stripe while JU went to the line just 20 times, hitting 15.
The Dolphins held a 32-26 advantage on the glass, but couldn’t parlay that success into points.
JU fell behind early, but battled back to take a 28-27 lead on a Smith basket with 4:26 led in the half. Lipscomb finished the half on an 11-4 run to take a 38-32 lead at halftime.
The Dolphins saw Lipscomb slowly extend the lead to 18, 64-46, on a 3-pointer by Jordan Burgason with 12:14 left in regulation.
JU cut the deficit to six but could never get any closer as Lipscomb pushed the lead back to double digits and never let the Dolphins back into the game.
The Dolphins got 17 points from Lehmon Colbert and 12 points from Travis Cohn in a losing effort. Smith had five assists and five rebounds while Colbert had a team-best seven boards.
The Bisons got 15 from Josh Slater, 12 from Wright, 11 from Michael Lusk Burgason and 10 from Jimmy Oden.
JU and Belmont will tipoff for the A-Sun title on Saturday night at 5:15 p.m.
