Men’s basketball signs Russell Powell
Russell Powell, a talented football and basketball player at Newnan High School, has signed with the JU men’s basketball team for next season.

The 5-foot-9 point guard led the Cougars to the state Final Four in both basketball and football this season, averaging 17 points and nine assists per game.

“Russell is a quick point guard with speed,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “When he’s on the floor, he’s the general of his team. He not only has a high basketball IQ, but he also is a very good student and is the definition of an all-around student-athlete.

“He’s also a proven winner. Having led his team to the state Final Four in both basketball and football says something about the type of competitor that he is.”

In leading Newnan to its first Final Four appearance in 54 years, Powell scored 29 points against Valdosta en route to being named the Region 4, Class 5A “Player of the Year.” He received a plethora of honors, being named to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution second team all-state, the Georgia Hoops All-State first team while being a McDonald’s All-America nominee.

He also was a star on the football field as well, leading the Cougars to the state semifinals as quarterback. In a stellar senior season, Powell threw for 2,266 yards and 24 touchdowns to go along 510 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He was named Region 4, Class 5A “Player of the Year,” Atlanta Journal-Constitution all-state honorable mention and the GACA South “Player of the Year.”

The success on the football field had him being recruited by several major programs, while in basketball he received scholarship offers from Harvard and Toledo before Jacksonville.

While being a star athlete, he is also a star student as he will be an honor graduate this spring.
