Men’s basketball signs Josh Sparks in early signing period
Josh Sparks, from Savannah, Ga., signed his letter of intent to join the JU men’s basketball team for the 2009-10 season.
A 6-foot-8 forward, Sparks is the leading scorer at Savannah Christian – guiding the Raiders to the state playoffs the past two seasons.
“Josh has a lot of talent and comes from a successful high school program,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “He has the ability to score in the post and has the range to knock down a 15-foot jumper. His work ethic and determination to succeed make him a great fit for our program.”
Sparks, a first team all-region selection as a junior, averaged 14.8 points per game to go with 11.2 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game.
“Josh has improved more in a shorter period of time than any player I have coached and he has yet to reach the ceiling on his potential,” said Savannah Christian head coach Steven Edenfield. “He handles the ball extremely well for a player his size, has an extraordinary first step and is an excellent passer with exceptional court vision. He is a very good offensive rebounder and his perimeter shot is improving all the time. In addition he has all the tools to become an outstanding defensive player as well. It is readily apparent why so many college coaches were excited about his future and I believe he will be a major asset for Jacksonville University."
The team’s offensive MVP as a junior, he was also voted second team all-Coastal Empire and was named to the Bluffton Christmas Tournament all-tournament team.
