Men’s basketball opens practice in preparations for overseas trip
The JU men’s basketball team is getting an early start to the 2012-13 season as they have started practice for an overseas trip to the Dominican Republic beginning Aug. 12
The Dolphins will travel to the town of Juan Dolio on the southern shore of the island until Aug. 17 and stay in Boca Chica. They will play three to four contests against teams comprised of former junior national and national squad members. JU will also use its time to visit three villages to read, play games and spend time with local children.
The team is welcoming any donations of books, games and clothes to hand out to children in the villages.
“We are looking forward to playing against good competition,” JU head coach Cliff Warren said. “The biggest thing is being able to practice for 10 days and putting our system in on offense and defense. Summer school maybe over but we are using our practices like a Basketball 101 class. We are doing a lot of teaching on and off the court.
“I am also looking forward to visiting and serving to the people in the Dominican Republic .We have a bunch of young men who come from different walks of life, but I don’t think any of them will see what we will see in those villages. Hopefully we all will get a better appreciation for what we have.”
This is the first overseas trip for the Dolphins since they travelled to Australia prior to the 2001-02 campaign. Warren will be spending his second straight summer overseas after serving as an assistant on the USA Basketball U-19 national squad last year.
Fans can keep with the Dolphins travels through a special blog from Coach Warren on JUDolphins.com. You can also keep up them on Twitter on Warren’s account (@CliffWarren) and the JU men’s hoops account (@JUMensHoops).
