Keith McDougald Named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team

MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun released the results of this season’s men’s basketball preseason vote by the conference’s head coaches and media on Thursday afternoon. Jacksonville University senior guard Keith McDougald was among the 10 honorees for the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team, and one of five unanimous selections for the group. In both the coaches and media polls, JU was picked to finish fourth in the league.

In 28 games last season, McDougald led the Dolphins in scoring at 13.1 points per game, as well as steals with 1.4 per game. He also connected on .363 of his 3-point attempts, including a .463 (37-80) clip in A-Sun contests. His numbers across the board went up in league play, with his scoring increasing to 15.4 points per outing, his field goal percentage going up by over five percent, and his rebounding totals increasing from 3.9 to 4.4 boards per game. Though standing at 6’1, McDougald added a pair of big-man double-doubles on the season, recording 25 points and 13 rebounds in a 99-92 triple-overtime win against Kennesaw State, and later adding 21 points and 13 boards at Northern Kentucky. He either tied or led the team in scoring 12 times in 2012-13, and added a team high in rebounds on five occasions.

“Keith’s inclusion on the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team is a testament to his hard work, so we’re excited for him to receive this honor,” said Head Coach Cliff Warren.

After finishing last season in a tie for fourth place in the regular season, Jacksonville was picked to finish fourth this season by both the conference’s head coaches and media. The top four selections in both polls were identical, with Florida Gulf Coast narrowly edging out Mercer for the top spot in each. USC Upstate came in third in each poll, followed by the Dolphins.

The first difference in the polls came in the fifth and sixth slots, where North Florida and East Tennessee State flip-flopped positions. The conference’s head coaches had the Ospreys picked fifth with the Buccaneers sixth. The media had the opposite, with the Bucs holding a small margin over UNF.

The results continue to match as both polls had the Stetson Hatters in seventh place. Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky came in eighth and ninth, respectively, in the coaches poll. In the media poll, the two sides tied for eighth. Kennesaw State closed out the poll in 10th place.

“To be voted fourth in the conference just goes to show how competitive the Atlantic Sun will be this season,” Warren said. “The top teams will always have a close race at the top, but I think that the teams that struggled last year are in a position to be much more competitive this year. We still have a lot of work to do, but our goal is not to finish fourth. We hope to overachieve in terms of what other people expect from us.”

Jacksonville opens up its regular season in less than a month’s time, playing at Florida State on Nov. 8. The Dolphins come back to host Trinity Baptist on Nov. 12 at Swisher Gymnasium. Season and single-game tickets are now for sale for all 15 of JU’s home games. In addition to nine A-Sun contests, Jacksonville also hosts the Florida Gators at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Nov. 25.
