JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore guard Jarvis Haywood was at the center of two Jacksonville men’s basketball victories this past weekend and on Monday received his first career Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award. It is the fourth weekly award Haywood has received from the A-Sun, after being named Newcomer of the Week three times last season as a freshman.

After being limited to 13 points in the two games coming into the weekend, Haywood broke out in a big way on Thursday night. Going into halftime, he had scored four points and the Dolphins trailed East Tennessee State, 41-34. That changed quickly. Haywood had poured in 10 points before the first media timeout and he went on to shoot 9-of-10 from the floor in the second half, ending the night with 28 points and sending East Tennessee to a 91-86 defeat.

No such dramatics were needed on Saturday. Riding the emotion of Senior Day, Jacksonville got off to a torrid start from the field and opened up a huge advantage over USC Upstate. Haywood scored 12 points in each half, providing the Dolphins with a consistent offensive force. The lead grew to as much as 21 points in the second half, with only a late hot streak from downtown from the Spartans making the final a deceivingly close 88-82. On top of his scoring output in which he shot over 70 percent from the floor in the two wins, Haywood also produced eight rebounds and five assists in each game.

Haywood has hovered at or near the top of the Atlantic Sun scoring leaders all season. He enters the final week of the regular season in second place in the conference at 16.9 points per game.

The Dolphins are currently the No. 7 seed for the upcoming Atlantic Sun Tournament but can rise to as high as the No. 5 seed depending on how the next two games play out. Jacksonville gets its home stretch underway on Thursday night at Kennesaw State, and then ends the regular season at Mercer on Saturday afternoon.
