Men's basketball faces first road trip at South Carolina State

Nov. 13, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's basketball team gets its first taste of life on the road as the Dolphins face South Carolina State on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Dolphins (1-0) are coming off a strong second half performance in the season opener that saw JU turn a tie game at halftime into a 16-point win.

"There were a lot of positives that we could take away from the game, but we have to take much better care of the basketball," said JU head coach Cliff Warren.

Lehmon Colbert opened his sophomore season in fine fashion, scoring 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.

The big improvement was on the defensive end in the second half, something that Coach Warren and his staff have drilled the team on in preseason camp.

The Dolphins held Savannah State to less than 30 percent shooting from the floor, hitting just 8-of-28. Aiding that effort was JU forcing the Tigers into 23 turnovers in the game.

The icing on the cake for JU was a stellar job of getting to the free throw line and converting when they got there. The Dolphins were 31-of-41 at the stripe, with Ben Smith going 14-of-16 on his way to 18 points.

Wednesday night's game will be broadcast on 1010XL, with Barry Milligan calling the action.
