Jacksonville, Fla. - The Baylor Bears used a 17-5 stretch run to hold off a strong Jacksonville charge and defeated the Dolphins 82-71 at Swisher Gymnasium Saturday night. JU had battled back from a twelve point second-half deficit to tie the game at 65 before the decisive Baylor run.

Five Baylor players were in double figures led by Jamie Kendrick with 19. Terry Black, 16 points-10 rebounds, and Ben Echols, 15 points-11 boards, each recorded double-doubles for the Bears, while Tevis Stukes and John Flippen had 14 and 11, respectively.

Junior guard Shawn Platts recorded a career high 25 points to lead all scorers, and was one of four Dolphins in double digits. Brandon Williams, with four treys, had 12 and Calvin Slaughter and Marvin Augustin contributed ten each.

Baylor jumped on JU early, leading by as many as fifteen in the first half. But the Bears had four starters with two fouls and another with three, so JU was able to narrow the lead to just five, 39-34, at the half. It did not matter that the Bears'regulars played most of the second half, the battle was on.

JU trailed 52-40 with 15:04 remaining after a Jamie Kendrick three-pointer. Over the next 9:46, the Dolphins outscored Baylor 25-13, and tied the game at 65 on a Marvin Augustin lay-up. JU had three chances to take the lead, but with 4:21 left, a Kendrick free throw gave the Bears the lead for good.

Baylor (6-2) won for the first time on the road this season, while JU (2-6) lost its third consecutive start. The Bears out-shot JU 51.6% to 44.1% from the field, although the Dolphins hit 7-14 from three-point range to just 4-15 for Baylor. Rebounding was a major game stat as the much taller Bears out-rebounded JU 40-28.

JU will face High Point in the second of its four game homestand on Tuesday, December 21.
