Men's Basketball Releases 2000-01 Schedule
Oct. 31, 2000
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The first-ever meeting between Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida in men's basketball highlights JU's 2000-01 basketball schedule, which features a road game at Florida State on Dec. 17 and 14 home games at Swisher Gymnasium.
The Dolphins and Ospreys will meet in an exhibition game on Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium as part of JU's 2000 Homecoming weekend. It will mark the return of UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen, who served as Jacksonville's head coach from 1991-94 before leaving for Western Kentucky. Tickets are on sale now for $5 at JU Athletic Ticket Office and on-line at www.judolphins.com.
JU's TAAC schedule features three separate trips to Alabama (at Jacksonville St. - Dec. 2, at Samford - Jan. 3, at Troy St. - Feb. 1) and four of the last seven games on the road. The Dolphins will also play American University, now coached by former Virginia coach Jeff Jones, on Dec. 21 at Swisher Gym in a non-conference contest. JU will open the regular season with Coastal Carolina at Swisher Gym on Nov. 18 as part of a tripleheader with football (1 p.m. vs. Monmouth) and women's basketball (5:00 p.m. vs. Davidson.). The Dolphins' first exhibition game will be against the Brazilian Nationals on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Jacksonville will have a different look this season with the addition of 6-10 center Kris Hunter, who sat out last season after transferring from the University of Virginia. As a sophomore at Virginia, Hunter was second in the ACC and eighth in the nation in blocked shots with 3.0 blocks per game, while scoring 5.4 points and grabbing 5.6 rebounds per contest. The Dolphins also gain size with the addition of forwards Tabari Brown (6-7, 230), Ali Kaba (6-8, 220) and Jeff Howard (6-9, 250), while junior college transfer Toby Frazier (6-2, 180) should contribute immediately at the point.
JU finished 8-19 (5-13 TAAC) last season, but six of the losses were by a total of 12 points. The Dolphins have been picked seventh in the 2000-01 TAAC preseason coaches poll.
