Basketball Wins Exhibition Opener, 65-63

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior guard Brandon Williams (Pomona, Calif.) scored a game-high 21 points and sophomore guard James Daniels (Port St. Joe, Fla.) hit a running jumper with 30 seconds to play to lead Jacksonville University to a 65-63 win over Club Pinheiros (Brazil) Tuesday night in an exhibition basketball game at Swisher Gymnasium.
Junior forward Ali Kaba (Sanniquelle, Liberia) added 13 points and 18 rebounds in his first action for the Dolphins, while sophomore Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) scored five points and dished out a game-high seven assists. JU out-rebounded Club Pinheiros, 44-29, while limiting the Brazilians to only 10 field goals in the second half. Senior center Kris Hunter (Tallahassee, Fla.), playing in his first game at JU since transferring from Virginia following the 1998-99 season, scored five points, grabbed five boards and blocked four shots.
Trailing 35-28 at the half, the Dolphins went on a 12-0 run in the first 5:48 of the second half sparked by eight points from Williams and a dunk from Kaba off a wrap-around pass from Sheppard. Pinheiros answered with a 20-7 run to take a 55-47 lead with 6:39 to play in the game, but JU finished with an 18-7 run to claim the season-opening victory. Center Marcio Cipriano paced Pinheiros with 12 points and seven rebounds.
JU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 10 with a final exhibition game against cross-town rival North Florida at Swisher Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The game will follow the JU vs. Mercer volleyball match at 5 p.m. and will kick off Homecoming Weekend.
