Basketball Downs North Florida 94-79 In First-Ever Meeting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Four Dolphins scored in double figures led by senior guard Brandon Williams' (Pomona, Calif.) 20 points as Jacksonville University downed cross-town rival North Florida, 94-79, Friday night in an exhibition game at Swisher Gymnasium. It is the first meeting between the two schools in basketball.

Senior center Kris Hunter (Tallahassee, Fla.) poured in 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 shooting from the line, while grabbing six rebounds and blocking four shots in just 26 minutes. Senior guard Shawn Platts (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore guard James Daniels (Port St. Joe, Fla.) each added 12 points as the Dolphins shot 61 percent (30-of-49) from the field for the game. Junior forward Ali Kaba (Sanniquelle, Liberia) grabbed a game-high eight boards while scoring seven points and blocking three shots.

Junior guard Koran Godwin paced the Ospreys with 28 points and five rebounds, while Joe Gaetano scored 16 points and John Arigo added 15 off the bench.

The Dolphins, who led 60-46 at the half, shot 33 free throws in the first half as the two teams combined for 44 free throws and 31 fouls in the opening stanza. JU extended the lead to 76-57 on two free throws by Hunter with 12:04 to play, and then pushed the lead to 92-72 following a Toby Frazier (Jacksonville, Fla.) jumper with 4:07 left in the game.

JU opens the regular season on Nov. 18 against Coastal Carolina at Swisher Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. as part of a tripleheader with football (vs. Monmouth 1 p.m.) and women's basketball (vs. Davidson 5 p.m.).
