JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Guard Brandon Williams scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed eight rebounds as four Dolphins scored in double figures to lead JU to an 88-69 win over Coastal Carolina in the season opener for both at Swisher Gymnasium Saturday night. JU has now won six of its last seven season openers, including two straight over Coastal Carolina.
Williams shot 12-of-18 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from three-point range in 32 minutes of action. Senior guard Shawn Platts added 17 points and five assists, while junior forward Ali Kaba scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Senior center Kris Hunter scored 14 points, grabbed seven boards and blocked four shots in his Dolphin debut as JU out-rebounded Coastal Carolina 41-33, including a 24-10 advantage in the second half. Junior point guard Toby Frazier had a game-high six assists and eight steals in only 24 minutes for JU, which limited the Chanticleers to 39 percent shooting for the game and forced 22 turnovers.
Leading 28-26 with 5:47 to play in the first half, the Dolphins went on a 13-4 behind two treys from Williams, a Kaba jumper and a three-pointer from Kevin Sheppard to take a 41-30 lead with 2:remaining in the half. JU opened the second half on a 15-6 run on the strength of five steals and four transition baskets to take a 58-42 lead with 12:50 to play in the game.
The Dolphin lead dipped below double digits only twice during the final 16 minutes of the game, as JU connected on 11-of-13 second half free throws.
