Men's Basketball Holds Off Georgia Southern, 80-78

Senior guard Brandon Williams had 21 points and senior center Kris Hunter scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead JU to a 80-78 win over Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. on Tuesday night. The Dolphins, who improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season, also forced 27 turnovers and got 15 points from senior guard Shawn Platts and eight points off the bench from Johnny Jones.

In a game that saw nine ties and 12 lead changes, JU did not take the lead for good until the final 2:02. Williams, who scored seven points in the final 1:04, connected on 10-of-11 free throws in the game, including five straight in the 64 seconds.

Hunter hit 10-of-14 shots, including 6-of-7 in the second half, and keyed the Dolphins' final push on both ends of the floor. Trailing by two with 3:37 to play, Hunter blocked Julius Jenkins' shot at the top of the key then took the ball the length of the court for a dunk to tie the game 69. On JU's next possession, Hunter had a follow-up dunk off a Kevin Sheppard miss to give JU a 71-70 lead. Jenkins answered with a jumper - his first field goal of the second half after scoring 11 first-half points - but Sheppard hit a runner in transition to give the Dolphins' the lead for good.

Dolphins forced 16 turnovers in the first half and Platts scored 10 points in only 12 minutes to give JU a 36-35 halftime lead.

Freshman Frank Bennett paced the Eagles with 19 points, while Jenkins scored 17 and Kashien Latham and Todd Shipley added 16 a piece. Sean Peterson handed out a game-high nine assists.
