Ali Kaba Named TAAC Player of the Week in Men's Basketball
Dec. 4, 2000
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville forward Ali Kaba (Sanniquelle, Liberia) was named Trans America Athletic Conference player of the Week on Monday after averaging 13.0 points and 10.0 rebounds as the Dolphins went 3-0 last week to extend their season-opening win streak to five games. He is the first Dolphin to be honored by the conference this season.
Kaba scored a career-best 18 points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds in just 24 minutes of JU's 95-44 win over Florida Tech on Nov. 29. Kaba's 16 boards are the most for a JU player since Micah Ross grabbed 16 rebounds in the 1996 season opener at Arizona State. The last Dolphin to have more than 16 rebounds in a game was Artemus McClary, who had 18 rebounds against Buffalo in 1994.
In Saturday's 51-40 win at Jacksonville State, Kaba stepped up with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds as the Dolphins battled foul trouble with center Kris Hunter playing only 13 minutes. For the season, the junior transfer is averaging 10.6 points per game and ranks first on the team and second in the conference with 8.6 boards per contest, while shooting .575 from the field.
The Dolphins, who are 5-0 for the first time since the 1979-80 season, return to action on Tuesday night with their TAAC home opener against Troy State at 7:30 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
