American Downs JU in Men's Hoops, 70-66

American forward Brian Williams came off the bench to score 31 points and the Eagles outrebounded JU 41-33 in a 70-66 win over the Dolphins at Swisher Gymnasium. It was the second straight loss for JU, which allowed a season-high 30 defensive rebounds and shot just 26 percent (5-19) from outside the arc. The Dolphins attempted a season-low 51 shots.

Shawn Platts and Brandon Williams each scored 18 for the Dolphins, but Platts managed just one field goal in the second half and Williams shot 4-of-13 for the game. The two did combine for 15-of-16 free throws. Kevin Sheppard added 13 points, three steals and three assists in only 19 minutes, while Ali Kaba grabbed a game-high 11 boards. Kris Hunter pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked four shots, but shot just 1-of-7 from the field. Kaba and Hunter combined for only eight points.

Brian Williams also grabbed seven rebounds for American, while shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 15-of-17 from the line.

JU led at six different junctures of the first half, but after tying the game at 21 on a Ronald Hearns jumper with 8:43 to play in the first half, American took the lead for good. The Eagles proceeded to go on a 6-0 run and led 31-30 at the half. JU tied the game at 35 on a Brandon Williams' three-pointer, but a three-point-play by Brian Williams and and Hearns trey extended the lead to 41-35 at the 16:56 mark. The Dolphins tied the game again at 43 with 12:26 to play, but Vladimir Buscaglia hit a three-pointer and American retained the lead the rest of the way, despite eight points from Brandon Williams in the final 1:58 and two late treys from Sheppard.

Hearns finished with 17 points and five boards for the Eagles.
