Men's Hoops Tame The Tigers, 67-52
Dec. 28, 2000
Savannah, Ga. - Brandon Williams (Pomona, Calif.) scored 19, including 14 in the first half, as JU connected on a season-high 12 three pointers in a 67-52 win at Savannah State. With the win, JU improves to 8-2 and matches last year's win total in only 10 games.
"I was concerned coming into game because of the Christmas break and the way we handled them in first meeting," stated JU's head coach Hugh Durham. "But we got a lot out of this win because when things got tough, we responded.
"We're happy about matching last year's win total because that was one of our goal heading into the season. And now we can concentrate on our other goals of a winning record and a conference championship."
The Dolphins, who came within one three-pointer of the school's single game record, hit 11 treys in first half, including seven straight to open the game.
JU jumped out to a 31-14 lead thanks to 58 percent shooting from outside the arc, and a stifling halfcourt defense that limited Savannah State (0-11) to just 28 percent shooting in first half.
However, JU's 37-22 halftime lead slowly dissolved as the Dolphins went cold and Savannah State connected on five second-half treys. The Tigers cut the JU lead to 53-47 with 9:25 to play, but the Dolphins outscored the Tigers 14-5 and limited Savannah State to only two field goals in the remainder of the game.
The Dolphins committed a season-low eight turnovers and limited Savannah State to 31 percent shooting from the field.
Maurice Bell led the Tigers with 12 points and four assists.
JU returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. against Lehigh at Swisher Gymnasium as part of a double-header with the JU women's team, which plays the College of Charleston at 5 p.m.
