Dolphins To Face Samford In TAAC Tourney On Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU will open up the 2001 TAAC Men's Basketball Championship on Thursday against fifth-seeded Samford in the second game of the night session, which scheduled to start at about 8:15 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta. The fourth-seeded Dolphins secured a first-round bye for the first time since joining the league in 1998 by finishing the regular season in a tie for third place ( Stetson, Samford) with an 11-7 conference mark.

JU's overall record of 18-9 marks the most wins for the Dolphins since an 18-9 campaign in 1995-96, while the 11 conference wins are the most in school history. The Dolphins won eight of their last 11 games and finished the season with a 12-2 mark at home, their best home record since JU went 13-2 in 1994-95 at the Coliseum. JU was picked seventh in the TAAC coaches poll and ninth in the media poll prior to the 2000-01 season.

Jacksonville and Samford split the regular-season series with the Bulldogs winning 75-56 in Birmingham on Jan. 3, while the Dolphins handed Samford its worst loss of the season, 74-51, in Jacksonville on Feb. 8. The winner of the Samford vs. JU game will play the winner of the #1 Georgia State and #8 Campbell/#9 FAU game on Friday at 6 p.m.

All of Jacksonville's TAAC tournament games can be heard live on WBWL, AM 600 "The Ball" beginning 30 minutes prior to tip-off with the Dolphin Pregame Show. The TAAC Championship Game will be live on ESPN on Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m.

NOTE: JU will practice on Monday (3:00-5:00), Tuesday (3:00-5:00) and Wednesday (TBA) at Swisher Gym. Interviews will be held before or after practice on Monday and Tuesday.
