Around The World With K-Dog

Aug. 22, 2001

Our first game was one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Powerhouse China, who was picked to win it all along with United States, got it's first scare from the Virgin Islands. We jump out on top of China 18-4 in the first quarter. Despite the Chinese team having NBA players Zhizhi Wang of the Dallas Mavericks, and 7-foot-4 Yao Ming, we were just not afraid of China. We constantly double teamed the two big men and took China out of it's game plan. We had the whole Chinese crowd silenced in the first three quarters of the game. China never led in the first half as we took 40-37 lead to the break. We later took a seven-point lead in the third quarter, and held our ground throughout the period. With a minute to go in the third, China tooks it's first lead of the game. The fourth quarter started and China had a three-point lead. The lead was back and forth for a while, but China's strength on the boards proved to be too much. The two big giants, Wang and Yao Ming, were just too big to handle as they scored 23 and 20 points, respectively. They were the only two chinese players in double figures. China won by 12, but they hit the bonus point in the end and widened the lead at the free throw line. They were only four points better than us, at best, but the game was exciting and the crowd was so electric. I never seen so many people in my life. China is just so amazing. The U.S. plays China tomorrow and we play Greece. I finished with 12 points and four assists. Hopefully I can top that next game.

See you soon.
