Men's Basketball Downs Angola Select 58-47 in Exhibition Play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior guard Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) scored a game-high 20 points and handed out six assists, while junior forward Calvin Warner (Jacksonville, Fla.) posted his second straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as Jacksonville University defeated Angola Select, 58-47, in its final exhibition game at Swisher Gymnasium on Friday night. The Dolphins open the regular season at home on Friday, Nov. 16 against Florida Tech at 7:30 p.m.

JU out-rebounded Angola, 46-23 for the game, including a 28-10 advantage in the second half as the Dolphins forced 18 turnovers and limited Angola Select to just 38 percent shooting from the floor. JU jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first 4:26 behind a pair of steals and three buckets from Warner and five quick points from Sheppard. Angola came back behind 10 first-half points from Abdel Moussa, who led Angola with 13 points and nine rebounds on the night, to take a 22-20 lead at the 4:54 mark of the first half. Following a couple of lead changes, JU regained the lead for good, 25-23, as junior reserve guard Chip White (Venice, Fla.) hit his first career three-pointer with 3:08 to play in the half.

The Dolphins extended their 31-25 halftime lead to 41-31 on a Warner jumper at the 12:58 mark, and then extended the lead to as many as 12 on a Tabari Brown (Brunswick, Ga.) tip-in with 8:06 to play in the game. Angola answered with an 11-3 run to cut the lead to 50-46 at the 2:29 mark, but Sheppard scored six points down the stretch to put the game away.
