Nov. 26, 2001

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU junior Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Basketball Player of the Week, as released by the league office on Monday. Sheppard becomes the first player chosen for the 2001-02 season after helping lead JU to a perfect 3-0 start, including a 1-0 mark in conference play.

Sheppard, an A-Sun Preseason All-Conference selection, averaged a team-best 16.3 points in the Dolphins' three wins, including a game-high 21 points against Florida Tech and 18 points against New Orleans. In the conference opener against Belmont, Sheppard added 10 points, six boards and four assists as JU limited Belmont to just 37 points - the lowest total since 1960 - and no free throw attempts in the 58-37 victory.

Not only is Sheppard leading the team in scoring from the point guard position, he is also second in rebounding with 6.0 boards per game and leads the team with 10 assists and seven steals. The 6-foot junior tied a career high with seven boards to go with his 18 points and three assists in the Dolphins' 73-58 win over New Orleans. Sheppard is shooting 93 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line and has been a key to JU's defensive success thus far.

JU is allowing just 54.0 points per game, while limiting opponents to just 34 percent from the field, including 16 percent (9-of-55) from three-point range. The Dolphins have now won 19 of their last 20 games when holding opponents to 70 points or less and are 15-2 at Swisher Gymnasium in the last 17 contests.

JU returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 29 at UCF at 7:30 p.m. and then will host Stetson on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium in the Dolphins' third conference game in eight days.
