Men's Basketball Blows Past Savannah State, 91-49

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior forward Calvin Warner (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while junior guard Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) scored 20 points in 23 minutes, as JU sprinted past Savannah St., 91-49, Saturday evening in a non-conference game at Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins improve to 5-1 on the season, including 5-0 at home for the first time since the 1979-80 season.

Warner hit 10-of-13 shots as the Dolphins shot 50 percent for the game, including 63 percent in the second half. JU also scored 30 points off 23 Savannah St. turnovers and limited the Tigers to just 32 percent shooting from the floor. The Dolphins have now held five-of-six opponents to less than 40 percent shooting on the season. Junior center Ryan Lewis (New Orleans, La.) blocked nine shots as the Dolphins registered 11 rejections for the game - the most since Dec. 23, 1989 when JU blocked 11 shots against VCU. The Dolphins also had 15 steals - the fourth most all-time - and the most since 1997.

Freshman guard David Lee (Columbus, Ga.) added a career-best 10 points, two assists and two steals, while junior center Jeff Howard (Dallas, Texas) scored a career-high nine points off the bench. Junior Marcus Boyd led Savannah St. with 12 points and Alvin Payton scored 10 and grabbed nine rebounds.

JU quickly expanded upon its 38-23 halftime lead with a 35-11 run over the first 11 minutes of the second half to build a 73-34 advantage. The Dolphins extended the lead to as much as 43 with 2:29 to play and then cruised to the 42-point victory.

The Dolphins return to action on Saturday, Dec. 15 when they begin a nine-day, five-game road trip at Texas when they take on the Longhorns at 8 p.m. Eastern. JU then travels to play Wichita St. on Dec. 17 and will participate in the San Juan Shootout in Carolina, Puerto Rico Dec. 20-22.
