Jan. 21, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - For the first time since the poll's inception, the Jacksonville University basketball team has entered the CollegeInsider.Com Mid-Major Top 25 rankings. The Dolphins, who have been receiving votes the entire season, enter the poll at No. 22 this week following a 74-71 win over Troy State on Saturday. JU is 14-5 overall, 8-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, and has won eight of its last nine games, including four straight. The Dolphins are tied for first in the A-Sun along with Samford, which handed JU its only home loss this season.

Dolphin head coach Hugh Durham is one of 31 Division I coaches involved in the voting panel. The Mid-Major Poll is made up teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Sun Belt and West Coast.

JU is off to its best start since the 1979-80 season, when the Dolphins opened the year 19-5 before finishing 20-9 following a 53-49 loss to Murray State in the N.I.T. The Dolphins are 8-1 at home, but have played nine of their last 13 games on the road. JU will play six of its next eight games away from Swisher Gymnasium starting with a 7 p.m. game tomorrow at Stetson.

Jacksonville was one of three new teams to enter the poll this week along with The Citadel (13-4) and Loyola-Chicago (11-5). Gonzaga remains No. 1 in the poll despite ending a 12-game win streak last week with an 88-79 loss at Pepperdine.
