Feb. 26, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University junior Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) has been named Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun, as voted on by league head coaches today. The 6-foot point guard, who was also named to the preseason all-conference team by the media, finished the regular season 16th in the league with 13.4 points per game, while leading the team and ranking fourth in the A-Sun with 4.2 assists per contest.

Sheppard's junior season has been a tale of two halves. After leading the team in scoring for the first part of the year, Sheppard has switched gears down the stretch and has increased his assist numbers. Despite leading the team in scoring in 19-of-29 games, he is averaging 6.4 assists and just 2.5 turnovers in the last nine games, including a career-best 11 assists at Belmont on Feb. 16. He has been a major factor in the Dolphins' two overtime wins this season, scoring 13 of his career-high 29 points in overtime to lead JU past Jacksonville State, 100-98, in a triple-overtime thriller on Feb. 9. He followed that with two game-winning free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining as JU slipped past UCF, 82-80, in overtime on Saturday. Sheppard also ranks 12th in the league in free throw percentage (76 percent) and is shooting 43 percent from the floor. His 117 assists for the season are the most at JU since Jeremy Livingston had 134 in 1993-94.

Sheppard has moved up to 10th all-time at JU with 294 career assists, while ranking sixth all-time with 111 career three-pointers and fourth all-time with 327 career three-point attempts. He currently has 804 career points and 294 career assists in 83 games at JU.

The Dolphins are preparing for their first-round game of the Atlantic Sun Championship (Orlando, Fla.) on Thursday against third-seeded Florida Atlantic (16-11, 13-7) at 8:15 p.m. JU and FAU split the season series, but the Dolphins hold an 8-3 advantage over the Owls all-time.
