Sixth-Seeded Dolphins to Face No. 3 Florida Atlantic in First Round of Atlantic Sun Championship

Feb. 24, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University Dolphins will open up the 2002 Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball Championship on Thursday, Feb. 28 against third-seeded Florida Atlantic in the second game of the night session, which scheduled to start at about 8:15 p.m. at the UCF Arena in Orlando. The Sixth-seeded Dolphins (18-11, 12-8 A-Sun) finished the regular season tied for fourth in the league along with Samford (15-13, 12-8) and UCF (16-11, 12-8). Georgia State (18-9, 14-6) and Troy State (18-9, 14-6) shared the regular-season title, while Florida Atlantic (16-11, 13-7) finished third.

JU's overall record of 18-11 marks the Dolphins' first back-to-back winning seasons since 1994-95 (18-9) and 1995-96 (15-13), while JU's 12 conference wins are the most in school history (JU also went 12-8 in the Sun Belt in 1994-95). Following last year's 18-10 campaign, the Dolphins' 36 wins over the past two seasons are the most victories in back-to-back seasons since 1985-86 (21-10) and 1986-87 (19-11). JU closed the season with a thrilling, 82-80, overtime win over UCF on Saturday. The Dolphins finished the year 10-3 at home, 7-6 in road games and 1-2 at neutral sites. The seven road wins for JU are the most since 1975-76 (7-5).

Jacksonville and Florida Atlantic split the season series with each team winning on the opponent's home floor. JU defeated FAU, 73-58, on Jan. 2 in Boca Raton and the Owls responded with a 76-72 win at Swisher Gymnasium on Feb. 21. The winner of the Florida Atlantic vs. JU game will play the winner of #2 Troy State vs. #7 Jacksonville State on Friday at 8:15 p.m.
