Basketball's Sheppard and Warner Earn Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference Honors
Oct. 30, 2002
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University's Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) and Calvin Warner (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) were both chosen to the Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference Basketball Team on Wednesday. JU, which is favored to win the A-Sun's South Division, is the only school that features two players on the preseason all-conference team.
Sheppard, a Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun selection as a junior, averaged 13.5 points and a team-high 4.1 assists last season and emerged as arguably the best defensive guard in the league. The 6-foot senior point guard was one of the top free-throw shooters in the A-Sun (75 percent) and was second on the team with 41 steals. Sheppard has also been tabbed by four national publications as a preseason all-conference selection, while The Sporting News called him the "Best Playmaker" in the Atlantic Sun and Blue Ribbon said the Dolphins have the "Top Backcourt" in the league.
Warner was one of the A-Sun's top all-around players as a junior, when he averaged 13.7 points per game, ranked fourth in the league in rebounding (8.2 rpg) and third in the conference in blocked shots (1.72 bpg). The 6-foot-7 forward had six double-doubles on the season, and his 50 blocks rank eighth at JU for a single season. Warner was also honored nationally by Lindy's as a preseason all-conference selection, while The Sporting News tabbed him the "Best Dunker" in the Atlantic Sun.
Georgia State's Lamont McIntosh was voted as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year by league head coaches after averaging 12.2 points and 4.1 assists per game as a sophomore. Other preseason honorees include Mercer forward Scott Emerson, who missed nearly all of last season due to injury after averaging 16.0 points and 7.3 rebounds as a sophomore, as well as Belmont's Adam Sonn, a 6-foot-8 forward who averaged 18.8 points and 10.3 rebounds in his first season of A-Sun play.
The Dolphins, who were a unanimous selection by both the coaches and the media to win the South Division, have also been picked to win the A-Sun South by five national publications. JU returns four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's 18-12 team (12-8 A-Sun). The Dolphins are coming off back-to-back 18-win seasons for the first time in more than 15 years, while sporting two of the best defenses in school history. 2002-03 Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball
