Dolphins Down North Florida In Hoops Exhibition, 75-60

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior guard James Daniels (Port St. Joe, Fla.) scored a game-high 21 points and had six steals, while senior forward Calvin Warner (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) scored 15, grabbed five rebounds and had five steals as Jacksonville posted a 75-60 win over North Florida in exhibition play Wednesday night at Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins will play their final exhibition game on Friday against the Argentina Select team at 7 p.m. at Swisher as part of doubleheader with the JU women, who play Saint Leo at 4:30 p.m.

Senior forward Antwan Robertson (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) added 13 points and seven boards for the Dolphins, who shot 52 percent for the game and forced 31 turnovers. Senior guard Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) added eight points and a game-high six assists in 20 minutes. JU had 17 steals and scored 32 points off North Florida turnovers.

Donny Lotz had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Ospreys, who out-rebounded the Dolphins 40-34, but shot just 37 percent for the game. Guard Mark Riley added 11 points, while senior Chris Ireland scored eight and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

JU jumped out to a 43-25 halftime lead behind 17 first-half points from Daniels and 24 points off 18 North Florida turnovers. The Dolphins extended the lead to as much as 20 on three occasions, but the Ospreys battled back with a 14-4 run midway through the second half to cut the lead to 59-49 with 9:49 to play. JU pushed the lead back to 15 with five free throws over a three-minute span. The teams combined for nine fouls and 10 free throws in the final five minutes, including four technical fouls on one possession, which resulted in two ejections.

The Dolphins open the regular season on Nov. 22 against Saint Leo at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
