Kevin Sheppard Named A-Sun Basketball Player of the Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU guard Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Sheppard averaged 23.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists last week, including a career-best 30 points against No. 23 Mississippi State as the Dolphins (3-3) finished the week 2-1.

The Preseason All-Atlantic Sun selection hit 4-of-5 three-pointers and 12-of-13 free throws against Mississippi State to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Sheppard, who has scored in double figures in all six games, scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out six assists in an 82-68 win over Grambling State, and then had 18 points in the Dolphins' 60-47 win at Savannah State on Wednesday. For the week, Sheppard hit 32-of-36 (89 %) free throws.

For the season, Sheppard leads the Dolphins and ranks third in the A-Sun in scoring with 19.0 points per game, while leading the team and ranking 11th in the A-Sun with 3.8 assists per game. He's shooting 53 percent from the floor and has hit 39-of-47 (83 %) from the free throw line in just six games.

JU returns to action on Friday against Southern Miss at 6:45 p.m. (EST) in the first round of the Gazette/Hawkeye Challenge, hosted by the University of Iowa. It will be the Dolphins sixth-straight road game after JU opened with six games in the first 10 days.
