IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Greg Johnson and Charles Gaines each scored 15 points to lead Southern Mississippi to a 62-61 victory over Jacksonville in the first round of the Hawkeye Challenge Friday.

The Golden Eagles (5-0) erased a seven-point first-half deficit with a 15-4 run to open the second half with a stingy defense and a string of easy baskets inside.

The Dolphins (3-4) jumped out to a 17-7 lead just seven minutes into the game behind the shooting of Calvin Warner, who finished with 10 points and Kevin Sheppard, who led all scorers with 20 points. But the Golden Eagles closed the gap late in the half on baskets by Gaines and Dante Stiggers, who finished with 10 points and seven assists.

The teams traded baskets in the final minutes, and Jacksonville had a chance to take the lead with seven seconds remaining when Nolan McBride grabbed a rebound off a missed Dolphin free throw. McBride, who finished with eight points, missed a turnaround jumper from 10 feet out.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Dolphins 45 percent to 39 percent. Jacksonville was also hurt by poor shooting from 3-point range, hitting just 4-of-17 attempts.

The win puts Southern Mississippi in Saturday's championship round of the annual tournament. The Golden Eagles will play the winner of the second Friday night game between host Iowa and Montana State.
