Dolphins Rebound With 76-68 Win Over South Carolina State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior forward Calvin Warner (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed six rebounds as JU snapped a four-game losing streak with a 76-68 win over South Carolina State Saturday night at Swisher Gymnasium. Moses Malone, Jr. led the Bulldogs (1-4) with 22 points, including a perfect 12-of-12 from the line. It was the Dolphins' first home game since Nov. 22 after playing seven straight on the road.

Senior point guard Kevin Sheppard (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) added 17 points and four assists for the Dolphins, while James Daniels (Port St. Joe, Fla.) hit five three's to finish with 15 points, three steals, three assists and two blocks. JU, which forced 28 turnovers and limited South Carolina St. to just 41 percent shooting from the field, hit 10-of-18 from outside the arc. Senior center Tabari Brown (Brunswick, Ga.) gave the Dolphins a spark off the bench with eight points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

JU fell behind 6-0 in the first three minutes, but rebounded to take its first lead, 11-10, at the 9:26 mark of the first half. The Dolphins led 21-18 when Sheppard scored seven-straight points, including a pair of three-pointers, to spark a 15-2 run and give JU a 36-20 lead with 2:45 to play in the half. South Carolina St. ended the first half with five-straight points, including a 45-foot three-pointer by Malone to cut the JU lead to 38-25 at the break.

The Bulldogs whittled the lead down to four, 55-51, with 10:09 to play, but JU answered with eight-straight points from Warner to extend the lead to 63-53. Malone connected on a three-point play with 1:11 to play to bring South Carolina St. within four, 71-67, but the Dolphins connected on 4-of-5 free throws in the final 1:10 to seal the victory.

JU's Nolan McBride (Hartford, Conn.) and South Carolina St.'s Dustin Braddick were ejected with 26 seconds to play in the first half after getting tangled underneath the basket. The Dolphins return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Illinois State at 8:05 p.m. EST.
