Jan. 28, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior Calvin Warner (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Basketball Co-Player of the Week, as released by the league office today. Warner becomes the first Dolphin player chosen for the 2002-03 season after helping lead JU to wins over Campbell and Gardner-Webb last week. UCF's Ray Abellard was also tabbed co-player of the week after averaging 22.5 points in two Golden Knight wins.

Warner, an A-Sun Preseason All-Conference selection, averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last week, while shooting 61 percent from the field. The 6-foot-7 forward scored a career-best 35 points, grabbed six boards and blocked four shots in JU's 87-75 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday as the Dolphins improved to 9-10 overall, 4-3 in A-Sun play. Warner scored 23 points in the second half, including 10 in the first four minutes as the Dolphins extended their seven-point halftime lead to 19. He hit 16-of-21 shots from the floor and did all his damage in just 26 minutes of action. Warner's 35 points are the most in the Atlantic Sun this season and the most for a JU player since John Knox scored 38 in 1997. He started the week with a 15-point, nine-rebound performance against Campbell as the Dolphins posted a 65-51 victory.

For the season, Warner leads the team in scoring (17.6) and rebounding (7.8), and is shooting a team-best 54 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line. He has scored 20 or more points on five occasions, including four of the last six games.

JU, which has won five of its last six games, returns to action against Jacksonville State on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins' 87-75 win over Gardner-Webb made Hugh Durham just the 10th active NCAA Division I coach with 600 career wins.
